Inspire Me!
By Pam Best
Cast all your anxiety upon Him because He
cares for you. 1Peter 5:7
Perhaps the greatest fear of all is the fear of
failure. People are so afraid of losing the game of life, that they have devised a simple
way out - never get into the game; just sit on the sidelines.
My Interpretation:
The thought for today is too often the truth for most of us. We are plagued by a serious
misunderstanding. We sometimes think that when we fail at things that we fail as human
beings. That's why while I attended UNC-Chapel Hill, there were numerous suicides and
suicide attempts. There were students there that had never made B's or C's and when they
made a 'B' on a quiz for the first time, they felt like failures. They gave up on the game
of life, because they were afraid to face it under the new circumstances thrown in their
laps. We run from relationships because of the fear of hurt. We run from new job
opportunities because we fear not being able to meet the new expectations. We miss so many
of life's beautiful experiences because we are locked into complacency. Complacency is
comfortable. It's not ideal, but it's safe. What we so often forget though is that the
twin sister to complacency is stagnation. Sitting on the sidelines begins to give you
splinters and bedsores. Your own inaction will begin to stink and spoil. You settle in the
cess pool of regret. I have been there (and visit there all too often) and believe me, in
retrospect, I'd much rather try and fail, then never try at all. God never intended for us
to live lives of defeat. Christ came that we might have life, but not only that,we are to
have it more abundantly. Christians should be the happiest people on earth. We have a hope
that far outweighs the hurt of this world. Our joy should never give way to fear. God
didn't give us the spirit of fear, but one of love and power. The Bible tells us to be
careful for nothing. This means we are not to be full of care or, better translated, we
are not to worry about anything. Live your life to the fullest. Enjoy the bounty of the
earth that God has given man dominion over. Do not become paralyzed by fear. We are called
to live, not merely exist. Time is winding down and we are in the final minutes of the
game. It's time to get off the bench and play ball.
