On November 16, 1967, Lisa Michelle Bonet
was born in San Francisco, CA to a jewish mother, Arlene, and a
black father. Her parents divorced at a young age. At the age of 11,
she began appearing in commercials and she has said that acting and
auditioning was always something fun she and her mother did until
her teenage years. In between acting gigs in New York and Los
Angeles, she attended Reseda High School and Celluloid Actors
Studio. Her big break into the public eye came at age 16 when she
landed the role of Denise Huxtable on the 1980s hit sitcom The Cosby
Show. Lisa played the oldest
child in the house until the character of Sondra was introduced in
the flesh in the second season. Unbeknownst to many, Lisa's own
independent style shown through in Denise's costumes which were
"unconventional." She also made braces seem cool. For the most part,
while being outspoken in spirit (another sign of Lisa's personality
coming through in character), Denise was practically an honor
student. She had her choice of colleges but, Denise chose the
fictional HBCU Hillman College.
In 1986, while plans for her spin-off
show were in the works, Lisa took the role of Epiphany Proudfoot in
the film Angel Heart which also starred Mickey Rourke and Robert De
Niro.
Controversy erupted when a problem
with the MPAA rating became public. Angel Heart was originally rated
X. Soon the reason became clear. Epiphany Proudfoot was a voodoo
princess and she was involved in several graphic sex scenes. In
order to achieve an R rating, those scenes hit the cutting room
floor. In the meantime, many could not accept the wide divergence in
the characters of Epiphany Proudfoot and Denise Huxtable. This
included her Cosby Show co-stars. Nevertheless, plans for her
spin-off show continued even after the 1997 release of Angel Heart.
A Different World, a spin-off of The Cosby Show which takes place at
the fictional Hillman College, began its run at the beginning of the
1987-88 television season.
Prior to this, Lisa met Lenny Kravitz
(aka Romeo Blue) at a New Edition concert. Kravitz was also half
Jewish and the son of The Jeffersons star Roxie Roker. Their similar
bi-racial backgrounds and independent spirits made for a close bond.
The couple eloped in Las Vegas in 1987. By 1989, Lenny had landed a
record deal and recorded his first album, Let Love Rule. Lisa
co-wrote a couple of songs on the album and she was said to be the
inspiration for most of the album. Lisa even directed Lenny's first
video for Let Love Rule. But Lisa and Lenny's relationship was full
of problems from the start, including intense scrutiny from the
media and Lenny's reported infidelities. Towards the end of the
first season of A Different World Lisa became pregnant.
Coincidentally, Denise's first year in college had not gone as
planned and she began to question whether she actually wanted to
continue in college. It seems that although Phylicia Rashad's
pregnancy was being hidden with pillows, out-of-town trips and her
disembodied voice coming from the next room, Lisa's pregnancy could
not. This was compounded by behind the scenes problems on the set
with Lisa's attendance which was less than perfect. Lisa and Denise
left Hillman at the end of the season. A Different World continued
for several seasons without the character who inspired the show.
Zoe Isabella Kravitz was born in
December 1, 1988 amid another controversy. The newborn's pics
appeared in one of the supermarket tabloids. Apparently, Lisa's
mother sent the pics in to be developed and the negatives were sold
to the highest bidder. Nevertheless, the joyous occasion could not
save the couple's marriage. She filed for divorce on April 13, 1993.
It is rumored that Lenny Kravitz's second album, Mama Said, was
inspired by his heartache in losing his "soulmate".
Meanwhile, Lisa continued to make guest appearances on The Cosby
Show. Denise Huxtable became Denise Kendall and a step-mother,
introducing another cute "Cosby Kid" into the fore (Raven Simone).
Lisa chose to devote most of her time to raising Zoe, becoming a
full-time mom and part-time actress. She appeared in the low-budget
Bank Robber in 1993 with Patrick Dempsey, the straight to video
flick Dead Connection in 1994 with Michael Madsen and the made for
TV movie New Eden with Stephen Baldwin the same year.
During this time in her life, Lisa
began living with Brian Kest, a yoga instructor. Although it is
frequently reported that the couple had a child in the mid-1990s, no
name has surfaced. Lisa also legally changed her name to Lilakoi
Moon. She stills uses Lisa Bonet professionally.
Lisa and Lenny are still friends and
it was while playing music for Lenny that he first heard what Cree
Summer was doing. Cree, a former co-star from A Different World and
fellow Pirate, was working on her first solo album when Lenny called
and asked if she needed a producer. Cree did and Street Faerie
Cree's debut album was eventually born from the collaboration that
ensued.
By all reports, friendship and family
mean the most to Lisa. She, Cree and Marisa Tomei are members of a
group of about 30 women called Pirates. They get together for poetry
readings support and are bound by the idea that women should truly
be sisters and not vindictively try to bring each other down. She
also works with an organization called Venice Heart which works with
"delinquent" or "at-risk" juveniles.
In 1998, after much searching (she
did not have an agent at the time) Lisa was tapped for the role of
Rachel Banks in the Will Smith/Gene Hackman big budget thriller
Enemy of the State. In 2000, she played John Cusack's ex-lover,
Marie DeSalle, in High Fidelity. In 2001, she played Heather Lelache
in the A&E sci-fi remake Lathe of Heaven which co-starred James Caan
and Lukas Haas. In 2003, Lisa played the role of Queenie in Biker
Boyz. She continues to live with Kest in the Topanga Canyon area of
Los Angeles. |
