The
eighth president of Spelman College, Audrey Forbes Manley is the first alumna to become
president of this historic and well recognized institution. Prior to becoming president of
Spelman college, Dr. Manley served as Acting Surgeon General of the United States, and
Deputy Surgeon General. She is the first African American woman to achieve the rank of
Assistant Surgeon General (Rear Admiral), and the first to be named Deputy Assistant
Secretary for Health and Acting Assistant Secretary for Health. Dr. Manley supervised over
6,200 commissioned officers and was in charge of management oversight for the eight
agencies of the U.S. Public Health Service, which include National Institutes of Health
(NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). Dr. Manleys
30-year medical career included several key leadership positions in Public health service.
She served on the faculty of the Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine of the University of
Illinois, Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, and Emory University
School of Medicine. She is the former Director of the National Health Service Corps, the
agency which trains physicians for the nation's medically underserved, and provides
scholarships and placement opportunities for physicians.
Dr. Manley comes from a background of academic excellence
having graduated cum laude from Spelman College in 1955 and continuing her education by
earning her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1959. She holds a Master of
Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. Upon completing her residency at Cook
County Children's Hospital, she became the first African American woman to be named Chief
Resident of the celebrated medical facility. Trained in neonatology, Dr. Manley is one of
the nation's leading physicians, clinicians, medical academicians, and public health
professionals. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of
Sciences, and is widely published in medical literature. Dr. Manley has served in many
roles at Spelman College: Student and Alumna, Trustee, First Lady, and now President. As
President, she is focused on positioning Spelman College for success well into the next
century with the development of a Master Plan that will address the institution's needs
into the year 2010 and beyond.
