Dr. Algeania Warren Freeman, a native of Benson,
North Carolina, eleventh and first female President of Livingstone College. Dr. Freeman
served as a tenured professor of Speech Communications at Norfolk University where she
holds the distinction of being named to Who's Who Among America's Best Teachers as
selected by America's Best Students. She also served as Vice President of Advancement and
Program Development at Southern California College and Acting Vice President of
Advancement and Professor at Norfolk State University. She began her career as an instructor in 1973 at Norfolk State
University. Dr. Freeman served for 18 years as either an administrator or faculty member
at the following institutions: Morgan State University, East Tennessee State University,
Orange Coast College, and North Carolina A & T State University.
In 1977, Dr. Freeman earned a Ph.D. in Speech
Communications from The Ohio State University in Columbus. She received a Master's of
Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1972 from Southern Illinois University
at Carbondale. In 1970, Dr. Freeman earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in English from
Fayetteville State University. In June 1993 and in June 1998, Freeman also completed
postdoctoral study at Harvard University in the Institute for the Management of Lifelong
Education and the Institute for Management Development.
During 1999 and 2000, Dr. Freeman was selected to serve as
a Fellow of the U.S. Pentagon in the Army Center of Military History in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Freeman is also a Fellow of the American Society of Allied Health and was a finalist
for the White House Fellows program. Dr. Freeman served twice as an international
consultant for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Southern Africa. She served as a member of
the congressionally mandated National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine Study
Committee on Allied Health that was chaired by Dr. William Richardson, President of the
Kellogg Foundation and former President of Johns Hopkins University. She was appointed by
a Virginia Governor to serve as a member of the Statewide Task Force on Science and
Technology and as a member of the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech
Pathology.
Dr. Freeman has always actively served in the community
when called. She was President of the National Society of Allied Health and the Executive
Director of the National Black Association for Speech, Language and Hearing. She also
served as a member of the Board of Directors for the California Association of
Instructional Administrators.
Dr. Freeman served on the Board of Directors or Board of
Visitors for numerous organizations including Kids Voting of Virginia, Montebello
Rehabilitation Hospital/University of Maryland Hospital System, Maryland Easter Seals,
Friends of the Norfolk Juvenile Court, and Girl Scouts of Eastern Tennessee.
Dr. Freeman is married to Ernest Freeman who is the
Director of Planning for the City of Norfolk. They have one son Ernest "Trey"
Freeman, III who is an honor roll student and a football player at Stanford University.
